Covid-19 is an airborne disease.

We at Covid Safe Schools believe VENTILATION mitigation measures are essential to keep our children, teachers and community safe:

  • Real-time CO2 monitoring in every room of every Australian school to measure the indoor aerosol transmission risk

  • HEPA filtration when existing natural ventilation is insufficient or cannot be maintained

  • HVAC systems which ensure optimal heating & cooling is achieved in order to provide the best learning environments possible

We believe schools have an important role to play in social development and education. These measures are necessary to protect the safety of our children, teachers and community now and into the future.

Covid Safe Schools are essential to ensuring Covid Safe Communities.

Ventilation

We call on the state governments to install air monitoring and air filtration in public schools instead of relying on open windows to limit the transmission of Covid-19.

We are asking for an Australian ventilation plan to include:

• Carbon dioxide monitors to be installed in classrooms.

• Air purification devices (including HEPA filters) to be distributed.

• HVAC systems to be installed to ensure optimal heating & cooling is achieved to be provide the best learning environment possible.

We request flexible learning options so that families can make their own decisions about their children attending face-to-face learning.

Working to support teachers and staff who do not wish to return to face-to-face teaching.

Federal Petition

In late 2021 we submitted the following e-petition to the Federal Parliament calling for immediate action to ensure effective ventilation and air quality monitoring is installed and maintained in Australian Schools.

“To the Honourable Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives, as members of the COVID SAFE SCHOOLS association, we call upon the Federal Government to take immediate action to ensure adequate ventilation and air quality monitoring is installed and maintained in Australian Schools.

The current measures undertaken by the NSW Department of Education to ensure windows and doors are able to be opened is not sufficient. Covid-19 is an airborne disease. Ventilation, along with vaccination and vital covid-safe steps, are essential to keep children safe.

OzSAGE, a network of public health experts, believes ventilation in the form of HEPA filters and CO2 monitoring in classrooms are key requirements for the safe return to schools. Their stance is supported by both the CDC in the USA and the ECDC across Europe.

In the NSW Parliament, the upper house ventilation system has been upgraded to ensure eight exchanges of fresh air every hour on the advice of health experts. Our children should be afforded the same protection as our elected officials.

The Australian Government has a role in education funding and national policy.

We are asking for a nation-wide "Covid Safe Schools" program that provides funding for Co2 monitoring and HEPA filtration in all Australian classrooms.
